The Danish robot and automation industry has been growing rapidly. There has been a dramatic increase of the number of companies involved in robot technology in Denmark. From 2012 to 2017, the Danish robot and automation industry has experienced an astonishing growth rate of 200%; from 21 established companies in 2012 to 64 in 2017. In addition, 32 robotics companies were established between 2015 and 2017, representing 50% of the total at present time.
This dramatic increase of the number of robot- and automation companies in Denmark is fueled by a growing level of new patent applications as shown by the number of patent applications from 2015 to 2017. Although many filings in 2016 are yet to be published, a boom of published patent filings is to be expected.
This is indicated by the number of published patent applications in July and August 2017, corresponding to patent applications filed in the first two months of 2016. Assuming that the first two months are representative of the submission rate in 2016, 2016 may have been an absolute record year of patent filings in this industry.
It is anticipated that a large amount of patent applications will be filed by robotics companies working with the manufacturing of robots. These companies account for 40% of the total amount of robotics companies, the majority of which were established during the last five years.
